Recently NASA released a photo of a star as it is dying and it’s remains are floating into space. This is by far one of the most beautiful photos I’ve seen.
This is not an image that you normally see as it’s not something that happens fairly often. With how nice this photo is you would think that it is digitally rendered. However, it is an actual photo taken from the Hubble telescope. It has been put through an infrared filter to bring out the colors and different gases which gives it this amazing look.
One day our sun will too explode into an awesome site such is this. Unfortunately, It is a shame that due to budget cuts these kind of programs are no longer as big as they once were. These sort of sites are all around our universe and it’s stuff like this that we want to know more about as we explore.
We’re yet again another election year and as always and as is custom now we are going through a large line of political slander campaigns. To me this is not what politics should be about. You should describe what you’re going to be bringing to the table that the other candidate does not offer. It should not be about focusing on what the other candidate has said or done.
Unfortunately, this kind of campaign is what makes for an effective campaign nowadays. People are so drawn into the drama and get caught up on everyone else’s slander. Politics is no longer become a game of policies and laws. It is now just a popularity contest between rich people who are just trying to become more wealthy from their financial backers and personal interests.
These kind of campaigns and movements further pull people apart as well as distracts individuals for a candidate’s faults. If all candidates were simply forced to put what issues and stances they agreed with and those they disagreed with then you may find out that no candidate would be who you want. Voting, in my opinion, is a decision between the lesser of two evils.
I’m really glad that I don’t have cable and don’t want to let the TV so I don’t have to deal with all the political advertisements that are currently on television. I’ve seen a few of these while watching over the air TV and they honestly have sickened me. Making one candidate look evil compared to another.
Basically that’s another one of the reasons why I want all of this planet.
Yesterday Nasa released a photo taken by the Hubble telescope and has identified roughly 5,500 galaxies in just one small section of the universe. The faintest of these are one ten-billionth the brightness of what the human eye can see, so don’t try and pinpoint them in the night sky. It’s hard to even grasp at how small of a section this is of the nights sky. One comparison I read was to basically consider this to be one 30-billionth of the visible night sky. So multiply 5,500 by 30 billion and that would be the potential number of galaxies in the known universe.
The brain has a hard time simply comprehending that number, much less the fact that a single galaxy is generally made up for many stars. Stars that may or may not be surrounded by multiple planets. Planets that may or may not be capable of sustaining life as we know it, or even as we don’t know it.
It’s amazing when you think about, and possibly even more amazing when you think about how little we actually know about the universe. How much of what we know as a planet could very well, and probably will come to be realized to be false. It is unfortunate that the budget of these programs is being cut instead of increased so that we can learn more. At some point our species will come together as one and look towards the sky together and ask aloud ‘What else is out there?’. However, what it will take and what pivoting event it will take to get there is really a speculation of many science fiction writers.
Remember when it was widely accepted that the earth was flat?
Or that everything revolved around the earth?
Well now we can add a new item to that list, Remember when it was widely believed the moon was dead and dry?
Today Nasa released information on the LCROSS results that show scientific evidence that there is in fact water on the moon in some form and a lot more than ever expected.
There is still a whole lot more data left to be analyzed but right now one thing is for sure is that there is water on something that we believed was dead and dry.
Permanently shadowed regions could hold a key to the history and evolution of the solar system, much as an ice core sample taken on Earth reveals ancient data. In addition, water, and other compounds represent potential resources that could sustain future lunar exploration.
Many questions are still left to be asked, for instance does the finding of water on an object in space so close to our home give us more hopes that it is more common in space that originally thought? That just increased the chances of there being life outside elsewhere drastically.
This is an intresting video to watch and listen to. It may be hard to understand at times but the point it’s trying to get across is very deep and something that some simply can’t or refuse to get their head around.
The molecules that make us up we can all agree are very tiny and hard to see. If you are not sure what exactly a molecule is or the atoms that make it up please see this wikipedia article on molecules. When you think about the molecules that make us up it is really hard to describe exactly how tiny they are in comparision to units of measurement that we are used to. Now think about the size of our planet, most will agree that in our sense of measurement Earth is a fairly large object. But in the grand scheme of things in the universe it is nothing, it would be less that the size of a molecule in comparision to the entire known universe.
Now here is a random thought for you to ponder, what if the universe as we know it is simply something that is a tiny part of something even bigger? There is so much we don’t know about the universe and there are even somethings we don’t know about the matter that we are composed of.
Light Pollution is a type of Pollution that doesn’t get much attention now a days. Reason being is it’s not something that most people think about and it’s not doing us any harm right? For those who are not familiar with what Light Pollution is I would highly recommend reading this wikipedia article on Light Pollution. The type of Light Pollution I want to talk about is the type that interferes with the night sky in large cities.
Now why am I making an issue over a type of pollution that has no adverse health effects? Well besides the fact that it has pollution in the name I would like to go with the fact that if you life in the city you probably don’t know what the night sky really looks like. If you look up on a clear night in the city you may see 20 or so stars in the sky, if you are lucky and have a good vantage point.
Alternatively if you were to look up at the night sky from a location far away from any major city and at a higher altitude you would have a hard time counting the stars in the sky there would be so many. It is a magnificent thing to see and it really makes you think, but it is something that city dwellers lack.
Our advancements as a society have begun to block our view of something that made our ancestors strive for innovation. The sight of the stars in the night sky inspired thought and ideas and we as a society, as we further advance, take ourselves further away from the awe inspiring star filled night sky.
Don’t take the night sky for granted, if you have a chance take a trip to somewhere fall away from the cities and on a clear night sit out below the stars and take it all in. As our civilizations expand future generations may not have as easy as a time seeing what has inspired humans for as long as we’ve existed.
This last week there was a total of 32 new planets discovered. That is an amazing amount to me as these planets are very hard to spot as they are so far away. It really says something for the advancements we are making in technology. It is to bad that it is highly unlikely that we will travel to one of these planets in my lifetime or for that matter the lifetime of anyone who is alive currently.
Maybe it is just my love for science ficton or my strong desire to get off this planet bit I really wish we were to the point where we could travel to and live on other planetary bodies. There is nodoubt in my mind that there is a planet out there somewhere that is very similar to Earth in many features and can support life as we know it. Not to mention the planets that are not like ours but can still support life.
A planet doesn’t need to be cool to support life, look at the life that lives at the bottom of the sea near the hot underwater vents. Life can survive and thrive in the harshest of enviroments so what makes anyone think that there can’t be life on some of the planets that are in our solar system?
